Mercury Marine Ergonomics Program

Mercury Marine fosters a safe work environment where all employees are empowered to continuously improve the safety of our plant, including the reduction of risk for injury due to ergonomic factors. Management supports the team by recognizing the importance of employee participation in safety on an on-going basis, and providing resources to correct identified issues. Key aspects of our program include:

1) Employee participation in ergonomics team activities.

2) Training for team members to recognize, understand and assess ergonomics risks.

3) Hazard identification based on observations of job tasks being performed, employee feedback, injury history and risk recognition (i.e. force, posture, repetition, etc.).

4) Hazard assessment using screening tools, and ergonomics job measurement system methods which quantify risks to support investments, both before and after changes.

5) Prioritization based on exposure to risks, ensuring greater risks are given the higher priority when decisions are made regarding improvements and risk reduction.

6) Corrective actions which focus first on engineering controls (i.e. lift assists) to eliminate or reduce risk, followed by administrative controls (i.e. job rotation) where design changes may not be practical.

7) Medical management to ensure proper treatment of employee symptoms, and

8) New equipment and process design reviews to evaluate potential risks before changes are considered, so that ergonomic aspects are incorporated into work design.
